WeloLink – Empowering Cross-Border Livestock Trade in East Africa
Description
WeloLink is a digital platform that helps farmers trade healthy livestock across borders in East Africa. It uses IoT sensors, QR codes, and mobile payments to track animal health, movement, and certification. This helps prevent spread of diseases like Foot and Mouth by ensuring only safe, verified animals enter the market. Farmers earn more and connect in real time with buyers in Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, South Sudan, and DRC.
Impact
WeloLink helps farmers earn more by giving them access to better markets and fair prices for their livestock. It reduces losses from disease outbreaks by using technology to track animal health and movement. This creates safer trade, more jobs, and stronger incomes for rural families. It also supports regional trade and food security across East Africa.
Target Audience
The main beneficiaries of WeloLink are smallholder livestock farmers, traders, veterinary service providers, and cooperatives across East Africa. By improving access to formal markets, fair pricing, and disease-free trade, the platform boosts incomes and resilience for rural communities. WeloLink also supports government efforts to formalize livestock trade and improve biosecurity by working with key bodies such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives. These partnerships help align the innovation with national policies, certification standards, and regional trade frameworks.
