Sesame pod plucker for smallholder farmers
Description
The Sesame pod plucker will be a manual tool, light, user-friendly, and will save time by reducing the hours spent during harvest. The traditional method of harvesting sesame through cutting of the stems and mostly done by women is labour intensive and time consuming. The curing process also involves cutting down trees to construct drying racks. The field drying process in racks makes sesame prone to postharvest losses as a result of rotting due to high humidity which compromises quality.
Impact
● Youths will be trained to operate the mobile sesame pod plucking machines, thereby generating employment and providing a source of livelihood. ● Reduced school dropout rates owing to time availability for school-going children who provide most labour during harvesting ● Women have extra time to participate in income or economically empowering programs owing to the time availability freed by this innovation. ● The proposed innovation will reduce tree cutting, which occurs within areas of refugee settlements, hence, reducing double destruction on the environment by both the host community and refugees. ● Increased disposable income saved from labour and other harvest-related costs. ● Various consumable products can be realized from sesame, e.g, paste, fried, etc ● Also, due to the economic pressure, which is hitting many farmers, some bandits have also resorted to stealing sesame from gardens while drying on racks. This innovation will prevent this vice from happening in the future, hence, reducing loss and conflict, which may arise as a result of stealing sesame from the garden
