Developing Biodegradable Plastic Bags from Cassava

Agriculture Climate & Environment Prototype
Description

Almost all aspects of everyday life involve the use plastic bags. The conventional plastic bags (Kaveera) after use when disposed of into the environment is non-degradable. Their long after-use life span in the environment has a number of effects such as clogging the drainage systems hence flooding & poor sanitation, death of aquatic organisms when they end up in the water ecosystem, death of animals (cows) if eaten because they are non-digestible. To eliminate these plastic wastes, they are usually collected and burnt in the open environment which results in greenhouse gas emissions, hence contributing to climate change. My innovation seeks to develop plastic bags which degrades when disposed of into the environment after use, hence contributing to mitigation of plastic pollution and its associated environment health risks.
