Description
The solar- powered Smart Agro-processing and Irrigation Hub is a rural productivity model that irrigation Hub is a rural productivity model that integrates clean energy, precision irrigation , digital farmer profiling and valve addition into a single community based center. The innovation enables smallholder farmers to access affordable solar powered irrigation, digitally coordinated extension services, and a low cost Agro processing equipment's to reduce post harvests losses, increase yields and improve incomes.
Impact
The innovation will deliver transformational socio-economic benefits to households, farmer groups, youth and the wider Ibanda municipality. Its impact is both immediate and long term making it highly valuable for national visibility. 1. increased Household incomes by providing affordable irrigation and valve addition services, farmers will grow crops all year round instead of only during rainy seasons. Increase yields by 40 -60% especially for maize, beans, coffee and vegetables. This will result to household income rises and families become more financially stable. 2. Reduction of post- harvest losses, farmers in Ibanda currently lose 25-50% of produce due to poor drying, lack of processing equipment and spoilage in storage. The solar hub's dryers, threshers and mill cut losses to below 10%, enabling farmers to keep more of what they grow. More food reaches the market, farmers lose less money and hunger reduces. 3. Financial inclusion and stronger farmer groups; digital profiling builds farmer databases, credit history, production records and group management structures. This data enables farmers to access microloans, PDM SACCO financing, input credit, insurance and structured market. 4. Improved Food Security and Nutrition; with irrigation and drying families produce vegetables, fruits and nutritious foods year round, they will store food longer and children access more diverse diets. Better health, reduced malnutrition and stable food supply even during dry seasons. 5. Job creation for youth and women 6. Empowerment of women farmers 7. Climate resilience and environmental protection 8. strengthening the rural innovation ecosystems 9. Low cost of product 10. community level prosperity; this will lead to overall improvement in quality of life, reduced poverty and empowered households.
