LugSpell: The spelling detection and correction tool for Luganda

Education ICT Pilot
Description

The need for an automatic spelling detection and correction tool for Luganda is the reason for this project. Luganda is a major language in Uganda used for communication in the political, economic, and social contexts in central, eastern, and western Uganda. Baganda immigrants in the Diaspora use Luganda. The volume of writing in Luganda by journalists, authors, teachers and learners is enormous. Currently, errors are checked manually in the production of documents in Luganda, a tedious and time-wasting process. This requires a writing support tool to ensure effective written communication.

Impact

LUG-SPELL saves a significant amount of time taken by writers of Luganda to accomplish written tasks. This translates into efficiency and effectiveness in producing documents, hence more output. This is in line with enhancing knowledge production for development in all sectors of Uganda because Luganda plays a major role in information dissemination, knowledge transmission, and culture exchange among Ugandans.
